The former NZNO board of directors is now titled NZNO national executive after a new constitution took effect following a member vote in July.
The just-elected 2025 national executive members are: Wellington mental health nurse and former NZNO president Grant Brookes, Whangārei ED nurse Rachel Thorn, Manawatū mental health nurse Saju Cherian, Waikato primary health nurse Tracey Morgan, Christchurch RN Grant Cloughley, Rotorua public health nurse Rosetta (Rosie) Katene, and Whanganui RN Michelle Fairburn.
Brookes, Morgan and Cherian are current board/national executive members while Thorn, Cloughley, Katene and Fairburn are new. Thorn and Cloughley have both been on the NZNO-Te Whatu Ora bargaining team, and Morgan was vice-president 2020-2023 — as well as acting president for a period in 2021.
Brookes — who was NZNO president from 2015 to 2020 — stood for member voice; Thorn for improving working conditions; Cherian for the rights of all nurses; Cloughley for a better resourced health system; Fairburn for the voice of senior nurses and equity; and both Katene and Morgan for nurse recruitment.
They will join NZNO president Anne Daniels and vice-president Nano Tunnicliff who were both re-elected last September; and Kaiwhakahaere Kerri Nuku and Tumu Whakarae Tracy Black, who were re-elected and elected respectively and unopposed at NZNO’s hui-a-tau last August under NZNO’s bicultural leadership structure.
Voting closed on September 11 at noon. The results were declared on Friday by Electionz.com returning officer Warwick Lampp.
Out of 61,099 eligible voters — NZNO members — 4191 votes were received, or 6.86 per cent.
A total of 11 NZNO members put their hats in the ring for seven places. See the full candidate profiles here.
NZNO’s board is being replaced by that of a national executive, in line with “more egalitarian” union structures, after a new NZNO constitution was voted in by members in July.
The national executive members will be officially confirmed at NZNO’s annual general meeting this Wednesday.
- This article was corrected on September 15 with Michael Deibert’s correct vote tally; also to add that Tracey Morgan had been acting president for a time in 2021.
