The Council of Trade Unions (CTU), of which NZNO is an affiliated union, has welcomed a raft of changes to the Act, recommended by the Holidays Act Taskforce. The Government announced last month that it would accept the 22 recommended changes.
CTU president Richard Wagstaff was a member of the taskforce and said the changes should make implementation of the Act easier.
Two other significant changes are:
- extension of the criteria for bereavement leave to include more family members, including cultural family groups and more modern family structures; and
- removing the current parental leave ‘override’, to address discrimination against parents who take time off to care for their young children.
